Do You Need a U.S. Crewmember Visa?

If you work on board of a commercial sea vessel or an international airline in the United States and you need to enter the United States temporarily for up to 29 consecutive days, you will need to apply for and obtain a U.S. Crewmember visa (D visa). Common jobs: pilot or flight attendant on a commercial airplane; captain, engineer, or deckhand on a sea vessel; lifeguard, cook, waiter, beautician, or other service staff on a cruise ship; trainee on board a training vessel.

If you first need to travel to the United States in order to join the vessel you will work on, in addition to a Crewmember (D) visa, you also need a Transit (C-1) visa – so you should usually get a combination C-1/D visa.

Unless canceled or revoked, a visa is valid until its expiration date. Applicants for Crewmember visas must be able to prove that they are not coming to the country to immigrate, but rather for the purposes included under the visa.

Are You Eligible for a U.S. Crewmember Visa?

Even though the Crewmember Visa requirements are the same for all applications, the U.S. Department of State staff and the Consular officer might have additional requirements. We are here to carefully review your case and make sure you meet all the conditions.

As an applicant, you must:

  • Have a valid passport. The validity date must be at least 6 months beyond your intended period of stay (unless exempt).
  • Work on board of a commercial sea vessel or an international airline in the United States, providing services required for normal operation.
  • Intend to depart the United States on the same vessel or any other vessel within 29 days.
  • Have sufficient funds to cover your travel, accommodation, and other expenses while in the United States.
  • Have a residence outside the United States, as well as other binding ties to your home country, that will ensure your departure from the United States at the end of the visit.
  • Have an employment contract and a letter (original) from your employer or your employer’s agent identifying you as a crew member and describing in detail the nature and function of your position.

How to Get a U.S. Crewmember Visa?

To apply for a Crewmember Visa you will be required to fill out your online non-immigrant visa application, gather all necessary documentation, schedule and attend an interview with a Consular officer.
File your application with the U.S. Department of State

In this initial step, you will need to gather all necessary documents and supporting evidence, fill in the online non-immigration visa application form, and file it with the U. S. Department of State. We are here to help you from the very beginning and streamline the process.

Schedule your Embassy interview appointment

Once you submit your online non-immigration visa application, you will receive the confirmation number for your application. Use the confirmation number and the MRV fee receipt to schedule your Embassy Interview. We offer step-by-step assistance throughout the process.

Attend the Embassy interview

During the interview, you will answer a series of questions regarding your background and upcoming on-board assignment, to prove that your visa case is genuine. You might also be required to present additional information and proof. You will usually get a determination whether or not your visa is approved at the end of the interview. We’re here to support you along the way, streamline the entire process, and boost your visa approval chances.
