Do You Need an IR-2 Child Visa?
If you are a U.S. citizen and you are planning to bring your child(ren) from another country to live (and work) in the United States, you need to obtain an IR-2 visa for your child(ren). In case you want to bring to the U.S. a child that you adopted outside the U.S., you may do so through a different procedure.
To apply for this immigration visa, the foreign citizen (your child) must be sponsored by an immediate relative (you) who is at least 21 years of age and is a U.S. citizen.
If your child enters the United States on the IR-2 visa when they are under 18 years old, they will automatically acquire U.S. citizenship if they reside in the United States with their parents.
Are You Eligible for an IR-2 Child Visa?
Even though the IR-2 visa requirements are the same for all applications, the USCIS staff and the Consular officer might have additional requirements. We are here to carefully review your case and make sure you meet all the conditions.
As a petitioner, you must:
- Be a U.S. Citizen, live in the U.S. and have a valid U.S. address.
- Be at least 21 years old.
- Have had legal custody of the child(ren) abroad for at least two years.
- Have lived with the child for two years before applying for the visa.
- Prove financial ability to support your child(ren) – meet the income requirement.
- Both you and your child(ren) must prove your relationship through a valid birth certificate.
As a beneficiary, your child(ren) must:
- Be a resident of a foreign country.
- Be under 21 years old.
- Be unmarried.

How to Get an IR-2 Child Visa?
The IR-2 Child Visa process is complex and it usually takes between 4 to 10 months to go through the 3 steps listed below.
File your petition with the USCIS
In this initial step, you will need to gather all necessary documents and supporting evidence, fill in the Petition for Alien Relative and file it with the United States Citizenship & Immigration Service. We are here to help you from the very beginning and streamline the process.
National Visa Center Review
As soon as your Petition for Alien Relative is approved, your case is handed over to the National Visa Center for additional review. The NVC may require more information, or supporting evidence. Once the NVC determines that your application is compliant, it will be forwarded to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate closest to your child(ren)’s residence. We offer step-by-step support throughout the process.
Embassy Interview
Your child(ren) will need to fill in (each) the online immigrant visa application, schedule and attend a face-to-face interview with a consular officer. Prior to the interview, the applicant(s) will need to schedule and attend a medical examination. During the interview, your child(ren) will answer a series of questions regarding their relationship to you, to prove that their visa case is genuine. It usually takes 5 to 15 minutes. Since the applicant is a child, they may be accompanied by a caretaker. Your child(ren) might also be required to present more additional information. You will usually get a determination whether or not your visa is approved at the end of the interview. We’re here to support you along the way and boost your visa approval chances.
